How To Get A Rounded Screw Out

A rounded screw, also known as a stripped screw, is where the slots in the head of the screw have worn out. This makes it difficult to unscrew, as it is hard for a screwdriver to grip and turn a rounded screw. Typically, this will happen when screws are old and have been screwed in and out multiple times.

If you need to remove a rounded screw, there are a few methods you can try. Once the screw is out, change it for a new and quality replacement screw.

Rubber Band Method

Place a rubber band over the head of the rounded screw, ensuring it covers the entire surface. Then, use a screwdriver to apply pressure while turning it counterclockwise. The rubber band can provide additional grip and help the screwdriver or drill bit get a better hold on the screw.

Hammer and Screwdriver

Take a flat-headed screwdriver and gently tap it into the screw head with a hammer, creating a slight indentation. This allows the screwdriver to gain traction. Then, try turning the screwdriver counterclockwise to remove the screw.

Pliers or Vice Grips

If the screw is protruding enough, you can use a pair of pliers or vice grips to grab onto the head of the screw firmly. Hold the pliers or vice grips securely, and turn the screw counterclockwise to remove it.

Screw Extractor

A screw extractor is a specialised tool designed to remove stripped or rounded screws. You'll need to drill a small pilot hole into the centre of the rounded screw using a drill bit that corresponds to the size of the extractor. Then, insert the screw extractor into the hole and turn it counterclockwise. The extractor will create additional grip to help remove the screw.

Cutting a Slot

If the screw head is accessible, and there's enough material around it, you can carefully use a rotary tool or a hacksaw to create a small slot or groove on the screw head. Once you have a slot, use a flat-headed screwdriver to turn the screw counterclockwise.

Remember to apply consistent pressure while turning to avoid slipping and causing damage. If you need to replace stripped screws, you can find a large selection of screws, including self-tapping, self-drilling, timber and coach screws in a wide range of sizes here at Fastbuild Supplies.
